Arachne was a mortal woman and an exceptionally talented weaver. She boasted of her skills. The goddess Athena, annoyed by her arrogance, challenged her to a weaving contest. Arachne was confident that she would win, despite Athena's godliness. When they finally compared the two tapestries, Arachne's was clearly superior. Her tapestry depicted the gods' imperfections and trickery, enraging Athena. The goddess turned Arachne into a spider, condemning her to weave intricate webs for eternity, a reminder of her hubris.
